Following the creation of Abia State in 1991 from the eastern half of the former Imo State, the institution was renamed Abia State University. In 2021, the Federal Government of Nigeria approved its upgrade to a full-fledged university, and it was formally gazetted and began full university operations in 2023. It is named after Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Nigeria's first and only Prime Minister, who was himself a native of Bauchi State. The university was established in 1980 as the Federal University of Technology, Bauchi, and admitted its first students in October 1981 for pre-degree and remedial programmes. Degree courses commenced in October 1982. In 1984, the university was temporarily merged with Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, and renamed Abubakar Tafawa Balewa College, ABU β Bauchi Campus. FUHSA was created as part of the Federal Government's initiative to expand access to specialised health sciences education across Nigeria, particularly in the underserved north-eastern region. The university is dedicated exclusively to the training of health professionals across clinical and allied health disciplines. The Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital (NDUTH) is located in Okolobiri and serves as the clinical training facility for the university's health science programmes. It is the most established and comprehensive university in Bayelsa State, with 12 faculties and approximately 16,000 students.
