About Nigeria’s States & Geopolitical Zones
The 6 Geopolitical Zones
Nigeria is divided into six geopolitical zones: North Central (7 states including FCT), North East (6 states), North West (7 states), South East (5 states), South South (6 states) and South West (6 states). These zones are used for political representation, resource allocation and federal appointments.
36 States + FCT
Nigeria has 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, created between 1963 and 1996. The most recent states were carved out in 1991 and 1996 under military administrations. Each state has its own elected governor, state house of assembly and judiciary.
