The University of Ibadan (UI) is Nigeria's oldest and most prestigious university, established in 1948 as University College Ibadan in special relationship with the University of London. It became a fully independent university in 1962. The university campus, designed by modernist architects Maxwell Fry and Jane Drew, spans over 1,032 hectares and is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful in Africa. Ajayi Crowther University (ACU) is a private Christian university established in 2005 by the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) through its Supra-Diocesan Board West. The university is named after Bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther (1809–1891), the first African Anglican bishop and the first person to translate the Bible into Yoruba. It is the first technical university in Ibadan and one of the few dedicated technical universities in Nigeria. Tech-U is located along the Ibadan expressway and focuses on producing technically skilled graduates in applied sciences, engineering technology and management. The university is designed to bridge the skills gap in Nigeria's technical and vocational education sector.
