Obong University (OBONGU)

The University of Uyo (UNIUYO) is a federal university located in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State. Its origins trace back to the 1930s as a practising school, evolving through a Teacher Training College in the 1940s, an Advanced Teachers Training College in the 1960s, and a College of Education in 1975. It was upgraded to the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) in 1983 and finally taken over by the Federal Government of Nigeria in 1991 and renamed the University of Uyo. UNIUYO operates a multi-campus system with four campuses across Uyo and is known for running an uninterrupted academic calendar — a rare achievement among Nigerian federal universities. The university currently has 12 faculties with a student population exceeding 30,000 and is accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

Ritman University is a privately owned entrepreneurial university located in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State. The NUC granted Ritman University its operational licence on 5 March 2015 and academic activities commenced on 23 November 2015. The university was founded by Senator Emmanuel Ibok Essien, who represented the Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District at the 4th National Assembly (Senate) from 1999 to 2003. Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) is a state-owned university established by the Akwa Ibom State Government. The university was conceived on 18 October 2000 and formally established by a university law enacted on 15 September 2009; academic activities commenced in 2010. AKSU operates two campuses — the main campus at Ikot Akpaden in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area, and the Obio Akpa Campus. The university is fully accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across eight faculties covering agriculture, arts, biological sciences, physical sciences, engineering, social sciences, management sciences, and education. AKSU is ranked 62nd among Nigerian universities in national rankings and is positioned as the leading state university in the South-South geopolitical zone.
