Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) is a federal university located in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, with a second major campus and teaching hospital in Nnewi. The university was established in 1991 as an offshoot of the defunct Anambra State University of Technology (ASUTECH), which had been founded in 1980 with campuses across the old Anambra State. UNIZIK was named after Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe — "Zik of Africa" — Nigeria's first President and one of the greatest pan-African nationalists of the 20th century. The university operates 15 faculties across its Awka main campus and Nnewi Medical Campus, offering a comprehensive range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in sciences, medicine, engineering, law, arts, agriculture, environmental sciences and management. UNIZIK is fully accredited by the NUC and is consistently ranked among the top federal universities in southeastern Nigeria.

Madonna University Nigeria is the first private Catholic university in West Africa and the first private university to receive full approval from the Federal Government of Nigeria.
