Role and Powers of a Nigerian State Governor

A Nigerian state governor is the chief executive of the state government under Section 176 of the 1999 Constitution. The governor commands the state executive council, signs bills into law, appoints commissioners (subject to state house of assembly confirmation) and presents the annual appropriation bill.

Governors are elected directly by registered voters through INEC-conducted governorship elections. A candidate must win the majority of total votes AND at least 25% of votes in two-thirds of the state's LGAs. Each governor serves a four-year term renewable once (maximum eight years).

As of August 2026, APC controls 27 of Nigeria's 35 governorships (77%), making it the dominant political force at state level and significantly influencing state budgets, security deployments and federal-state relations.
