Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri was born on 27 October 1967 in Gulak, Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State. He rose through the Adamawa State House of Assembly, serving as a member and later as Speaker on multiple occasions between 2011 and 2015.
Following the impeachment of Governor Murtala Nyako in July 2014, Fintiri, then Speaker, was appointed Acting Governor of Adamawa State, a role he had also briefly held in 2012. He went on to be elected Governor of Adamawa State in 2019 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and was re-elected in the closely contested 2023 gubernatorial election, defeating APC candidate Senator Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed by a narrow 3.75% margin.
On 27 February 2026, Fintiri announced in a statewide broadcast that he was defecting from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the need for closer alignment with the federal government to accelerate development in Adamawa. He was joined in the defection by his entire cabinet, political appointees, local government chairmen, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, and the great majority of PDP lawmakers in the state, making him the APC's 30th sitting state governor nationally.
