Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu was born on 25 June 1965 in Lagos, Nigeria. He studied at the University of Lagos, obtaining both a first degree and an MBA, and later attended executive programmes at the London Business School, Lagos Business School and Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government.

Before entering politics, Sanwo-Olu built a career in banking. He won the APC gubernatorial primary for Lagos State on 2 October 2018 and went on to win the 2019 governorship election, succeeding Akinwunmi Ambode. He was re-elected in the 2023 Lagos State gubernatorial election held on 18 March 2023, defeating Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the Labour Party and AbdulAzeez "Jandor" Adediran of the PDP in a closely contested race.

As his second term nears its end, Sanwo-Olu has thrown his support behind Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as the APC standard-bearer for the 2027 Lagos governorship race.
