Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic is the premier state polytechnic in Akwa Ibom State, established by Government Edict No. 11 of 1991 and officially commissioned on 24 January 1992. Located in Ikot Osurua, Ikot Ekpene, the polytechnic was created following the creation of Akwa Ibom State from Cross River State in 1987, driven by the need to provide technical and vocational education within the new state. Accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), the polytechnic offers National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes across seven schools covering Applied Sciences, Business Management, Engineering, Environmental Studies, Communication Arts, Legal Studies and Preliminary Studies. In 2023, the institution was ranked the second-best polytechnic in Nigeria by NBTE — a remarkable achievement for a state-owned institution. In November 2024, the polytechnic received NBTE approval to commence additional programmes, and its 2025/2026 session includes the new ND Law programme.
