The state capital Benin City is the largest urban centre, with a 2026 estimated population of 1,700,000. Urban population accounts for approximately 52.0% of the total, while 48.0% of residents live in rural areas. With a land area of 17,802 km², the population density is approximately 320 people per square kilometre.

Edo State has a young population, with approximately 42.8% of residents under 15 years of age and 20.2% in the 15-24 age bracket — together representing the youth bulge characteristic of Nigeria's demographic profile.
