Applying the NBS average annual growth rate of 3.0% for the state, the population is estimated at 7,080,332 in 2026, representing a significant increase over the two decades since the census. The state capital Uyo is the largest urban centre, with a 2026 estimated population of 780,000. Urban population accounts for approximately 44.0% of the total, while 56.0% of residents live in rural areas. With a land area of 7,081 km², the population density is approximately 1,000 people per square kilometre.

Akwa Ibom State has a young population, with approximately 43.8% of residents under 15 years of age and 20.1% in the 15-24 age bracket — together representing the youth bulge characteristic of Nigeria's demographic profile.
