The institution is situated on a sprawling 750-hectare campus at Gwallameji Village along the Bauchi-Dass Road in Bauchi metropolis. FPTB commenced full operations in November 1979 with 224 students enrolled across 11 departments, initially operating from a temporary site on Yandoka Road before transitioning to its permanent site in 1982. The polytechnic is fully accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and in 2020 received approval to run nine degree-level courses in affiliation with Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi.
