The polytechnic is named after Chief Akawe Torkula, a prominent Tiv leader. Staff were recruited by the state government in June 2021. Dr. Martin Moses Agena was appointed rector on April 25, 2024 by Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia, with a mandate to reposition the institution as a leader in cutting-edge technical education. The polytechnic is committed to global perspectives, innovative teaching and strong industry links. Makurdi, as the state capital, gives the polytechnic access to a wide base of prospective students and employers.

Akperan Orshi Polytechnic, Yandev (AOPOLY) is a state polytechnic in Yandev, Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State, with origins dating to 1926 when the British colonial administration established a farm training centre at Yandev in Tiv Province. In 1973, the Benue-Plateau State Government upgraded it to a School of Agriculture. The Department of Agriculture from the Murtala College of Arts, Science and Technology, Makurdi, was merged into the college in 1983. It was renamed Akperan Orshi College of Agriculture in 1992 in memory of HRH Orchiviligh (Dr.) James Akperan Orshi, Tor Tiv III, the late paramount ruler of Tivland. On June 10, 2020, the Benue State Government upgraded it to full polytechnic status under Governor Samuel Ortom. The polytechnic sits on a 231-hectare campus and is accredited by the NBTE. Current rector is Dr. Simon Iorchor. The governing council is chaired by Chief Dr. Victoria Terkumbur Pillah. In February 2025, the NBTE conducted an accreditation visit to the institution.
