Sampson Ekong Akpan was born in 1967. He is a graduate of Mass Communication from The Polytechnic, Calabar, and also holds a law degree, having been called to the Nigerian Bar.
He previously served as Commissioner for Economic Development in Akwa Ibom State before his election to the Senate. He was elected Senator for Akwa Ibom South in the 2023 general elections, succeeding Akon Eyakenyi (who became Deputy Governor), and is serving his second term representing the district in the Senate.
In July 2025 he defected from the PDP to the APC alongside fellow Akwa Ibom senator Aniekan Bassey, with their defection letters read into the Senate record by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
