👤 About Sen. Godswill Obot Akpabio
Godswill Obot Akpabio was born on 9 December 1962 in Ukana, Ikot Ntuen, Essien Udim Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State. He obtained a law degree from the University of Calabar after attending Methodist Primary School, Ukana, and the Federal Government College, Port Harcourt.
Akpabio served as Governor of Akwa Ibom State from 29 May 2007 to 29 May 2015. He was first elected Senator for Akwa Ibom North-West in 2015, serving as Senate Minority Leader from 2015 to 2018, but lost his re-election bid in 2019. He subsequently served as Minister for Niger Delta Affairs from August 2019 until May 2022, when he resigned to seek re-election to the Senate.
He won back the Akwa Ibom North-West seat in the 2023 general elections and was elected President of the 10th Nigerian Senate on 13 June 2023, becoming the 15th person to hold that office. In May 2026 he was returned unopposed as the APC candidate for Akwa Ibom North-West ahead of the 2027 general elections.
