Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) is a federal university of technology located in Bauchi, the capital of Bauchi State, in north-eastern Nigeria. It is named after Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Nigeria's first and only Prime Minister, who was himself a native of Bauchi State. The university was established in 1980 as the Federal University of Technology, Bauchi, and admitted its first students in October 1981 for pre-degree and remedial programmes. Degree courses commenced in October 1982. In 1984, the university was temporarily merged with Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, and renamed Abubakar Tafawa Balewa College, ABU — Bauchi Campus. It regained full autonomous status in 1988 and was renamed Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University. ATBU operates two campuses: the Main (Gubi) Campus and the Yelwa Campus. FUHSA was created as part of the Federal Government's initiative to expand access to specialised health sciences education across Nigeria, particularly in the underserved north-eastern region. The university is dedicated exclusively to the training of health professionals across clinical and allied health disciplines. FUHSA is accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and its health programmes are subject to oversight by relevant professional bodies including the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN). Sa'adu Zungur University (SAZU), formerly known as Bauchi State University, Gadau (BASUG), is the only state-owned university in Bauchi State, Nigeria. It was established in 2011 under Bauchi State law by then-Governor Mallam Isa Yuguda and commenced academic operations in January 2012. The university was later renamed in honour of Sa'adu Zungur (1915–1958), a celebrated Bauchi-born poet, Islamic scholar, political activist and one of Nigeria's earliest advocates for independence. Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic (ATAPOLY) is the premier state polytechnic of Bauchi State, established by Edict No. 1 of 1988 through the merger of two defunct institutions: the Bauchi College of Arts and Science (BACAS), which was itself established in 1976, and the then Bauchi State Polytechnic. The institution was subsequently renamed Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic via Edict No. 7 of 1994, in honour of Alhaji Abubakar Tatari Ali, a distinguished former Governor of Bauchi State and a pivotal figure in northern Nigeria's political and educational history. In 2013, the College of Administrative and Business Studies (CABS), Azare, was merged into ATAPOLY as a unit school and campus, extending the polytechnic's reach to the Katagum axis of Bauchi State. The polytechnic currently operates from two campuses: the main campus at Wuntin Dada, Jos Road, Bauchi, and the Azare Campus. ATAPOLY is accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and runs seven unit schools across its two campuses.
