Mukhail Adetokunbo "Tokunbo" Abiru FCA was born on 25 March 1964 in Lagos State. A career banker, he attended the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School and the Senior Management Program at Lagos Business School.
Abiru was elected Senator for Lagos East in a by-election held on 5 December 2020, following the death of Senator Adebayo Sikiru "Bayo" Osinowo in June 2020. He was re-elected in the 2023 general elections, defeating his closest rival with 178,646 votes to the PDP candidate's 80,249 votes — a 61.4% margin.
He serves as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions and has sponsored numerous bills and motions during his tenure. He is a member of the Lagos HOMs Committee overseeing the state's Home Ownership Mortgage Scheme.
