👤 About Sen. Enyinnaya Harcourt Abaribe
Enyinnaya Harcourt Abaribe was born on 1 March 1955 in Aba, in what is now Abia State. He served as Deputy Governor of Abia State from 29 May 1999 to 7 March 2003 under Governor Orji Uzor Kalu.
He was first elected Senator for Abia South in 2007 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party and has been continuously re-elected since, including in 2011, 2015 and 2023 — the latter with 49,693 votes. He served as Senate Minority Leader from 13 June 2019 to 27 May 2022. In 2018 he was briefly detained by the Department of State Security Services over his role as a surety for Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu, before being released on bail.
Abaribe decamped to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in 2022. He was named Chairman of the Senate Committee on Power in the 10th Senate on 8 August 2023.
