Orji Uzor Kalu, MON, was born on 21 April 1960 in Abia State. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Abia State University and built a career as a businessman before entering politics.
Kalu served as the 7th Governor of Abia State from 29 May 1999 to 29 May 2007, one of only three Abia governors (alongside Theodore Orji and Okezie Ikpeazu) to serve two consecutive terms. He was elected Senator for Abia North in June 2019 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, succeeding Mao Ohuabunwa, and served as Senate Majority Whip from July 2019 until June 2023.
He was re-elected in the 2023 general elections. Beyond politics, Kalu is known for his business interests and philanthropic activities, and is a leading figure in the Njiko Igbo Movement, which advocates for greater Igbo representation in Nigeria's presidency.
