Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) is a federal university of technology located in Bauchi, the capital of Bauchi State, in north-eastern Nigeria. It is named after Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Nigeria's first and only Prime Minister, who was himself a native of Bauchi State. The university was established in 1980 as the Federal University of Technology, Bauchi, and admitted its first students in October 1981 for pre-degree and remedial programmes. Degree courses commenced in October 1982. In 1984, the university was temporarily merged with Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, and renamed Abubakar Tafawa Balewa College, ABU — Bauchi Campus. It regained full autonomous status in 1988 and was renamed Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University. ATBU operates two campuses: the Main (Gubi) Campus and the Yelwa Campus. Its motto is "Doctrina Mater Artium" — Education is the mother of all practical arts. ATBU is internationally recognised, NUC-accredited, and affiliated with the Association of African Universities. It offers programmes across seven faculties with 43 subject areas and over 399 areas of specialisation at diploma, undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD levels.
FUHSA
Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare

The Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare (FUHSA) is a federal government health sciences university established in 2021 and located in Azare, the commercial capital of Katagum Local Government Area in Bauchi State, north-eastern Nigeria. FUHSA was created as part of the Federal Government's initiative to expand access to specialised health sciences education across Nigeria, particularly in the underserved north-eastern region. The university is dedicated exclusively to the training of health professionals across clinical and allied health disciplines. FUHSA is accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and its health programmes are subject to oversight by relevant professional bodies including the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN). In the 2024/2025 academic session, the university matriculated 1,178 fresh students. FUHSA has secured NUC approval for additional programmes and is steadily expanding its health sciences offerings.
SAZU
Sa'adu Zungur University (Bauchi State University, Gadau)

Sa'adu Zungur University (SAZU), formerly known as Bauchi State University, Gadau (BASUG), is the only state-owned university in Bauchi State, Nigeria. It was established in 2011 under Bauchi State law by then-Governor Mallam Isa Yuguda and commenced academic operations in January 2012. The university was later renamed in honour of Sa'adu Zungur (1915–1958), a celebrated Bauchi-born poet, Islamic scholar, political activist and one of Nigeria's earliest advocates for independence. SAZU operates three campuses: the main campus in Gadau (near Azare), a second campus in Misau, and a third campus in Bauchi (Yuli). The university's motto is "Ilimi Tushen Cigaba" — Knowledge is the Foundation of Progress. SAZU is NUC-accredited across all its programmes and has steadily grown to over 21,000 students. It offers programmes across nine faculties covering agriculture, arts, education, science, law, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, engineering and management sciences.
