Akon Etim Eyakenyi was born on 24 February 1960 in Urue-Offong/Oruko local government area, Akwa Ibom State. She trained as a teacher and holds a degree from the University of Calabar.
She served as Nigeria's Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development from March 2014 to May 2015 under President Goodluck Jonathan. She was later elected Senator for Akwa Ibom South, serving from June 2019 to May 2023, during which she sponsored a bill for the establishment of the Nigerian Coast Guard.
She was elected Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State alongside Governor Umo Eno in 2023, and defected with him from the PDP to the APC on 6 June 2025.
