Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Unwana (AIFPU) is the premier and only federal polytechnic in Ebonyi State, located in Unwana community, Afikpo North Local Government Area. It was established by Decree No. 33 of 1979, and commenced full academic activities on March 13, 1982, when 178 students were admitted into the pioneer programmes of Business Administration, Secretarial Studies, Electrical/Electronics Engineering Technology and Mechanical Engineering Technology. The institution is named in honour of Late Ezeogo Dr. Akanu Ibiam — former Governor of Eastern Nigeria and one of Nigeria's most celebrated statesmen — whose community donated 620 hectares of land for the permanent campus. The foundation stone was laid by then Vice-President Dr. Alex Ekwueme on April 30, 1982. In October 2003, AIFPU was designated a Centre of Excellence for the Southeast by the NBTE for its outstanding administration and programme quality. The polytechnic relocated from its temporary site at Federal Government College Okposi to its permanent Unwana campus in 1987. In February 2025, AIFPU came third at the National Tech Exhibition for Nigerian Polytechnics with its innovative Online Staff Appraisal (OSTAPP) project.
