The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) granted the institution its institutional and administrative approval to commence academic programmes on January 14, 2025, following a resource inspection visit from January 7–10, 2025. The polytechnic fills a historic gap as Abia State previously had no federal polytechnic within its territory. The institution is a beneficiary of the 2025 TETFund Zonal Intervention Project, which will support its physical infrastructure development. It is co-located in the same Isuochi community as the Ihechukwu Madubuike Institute of Technology, reflecting the area's growing status as an educational hub in Abia State.

It was renamed on November 7, 2024, by Governor Alex Otti to honour Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, the first democratically elected Governor of Abia State and former Minister of Science and Technology. Located in Abayi, Aba, near the Enyimba International Stadium, the polytechnic is accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE). Under its current rector, Dr Christopher Kalu Okoro (appointed March 2024), the institution achieved full NBTE accreditation for all 33 existing programmes plus 17 new programmes, cleared 36 months of outstanding staff salary arrears, and became the first polytechnic in Nigeria to establish a Department of Artificial Intelligence.
