Understanding JAMB Cut-off Marks in Nigeria
A JAMB cut-off mark is the minimum UTME score a university requires before considering an applicant for admission. The National Universities Commission (NUC) sets the national minimum at 140 for universities, but individual institutions set their own, usually higher, thresholds.
There are two types of cut-off marks in Nigeria:
1. JAMB National Minimum Cut-off: Set by JAMB and NUC/NBTE/NCCE depending on institution type. Currently 140 for universities, 100 for polytechnics and COEs. This is the floor — institutions cannot go below it.
2. Institutional Cut-off: Each university sets its own cut-off, which is always equal to or higher than the national minimum. Federal universities at top programmes may require 200–280+.
Important: Meeting the cut-off does not guarantee admission. You must also pass the Post-UTME screening, have the required O'Level results, and meet departmental requirements. The final admission is based on the institution's aggregate scoring formula.
