The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) is one of Nigeria's most strategically positioned agencies, managing the entry and exit of over 20 million travellers annually through Nigeria's airports, land borders and seaports. In an era of heightened global security concerns, the NIS stands at the frontline of border management and national security.
Nigeria shares land borders with four countries: Benin Republic (773km), Niger Republic (1,497km), Chad (87km) and Cameroon (1,690km). Managing these borders — many passing through remote and challenging terrain — requires a large, well-trained and geographically dispersed officer corps. The NIS also manages over 30 seaports and the three major international airports at Lagos, Abuja and Kano.
The NIS is currently modernising its operations significantly. The introduction of e-passports, the Integrated Immigration Management System (IIMS) and the biometric border management system means that technology proficiency is increasingly valued in new recruits. IT-literate officers with database management skills are particularly sought after.
A key attraction of NIS service is international exposure. Border posting officers interact daily with travellers from across the world, and officers at major airports encounter high-profile travellers and international business. Language skills — particularly French for officers posted to western and northern borders — significantly enhance career prospects.
The NIS also houses a specialised Counter-Trafficking unit that works with NAPTIP to combat human trafficking and the smuggling of migrants across borders. This unit offers particularly meaningful career work for officers passionate about human rights and public service.
