Nigeria has 36 states plus FCT Abuja. Governorship elections are held in all 36 states. They are conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) every four years. Some states hold off-cycle elections in different years (e.g. Anambra, Ekiti, Osun, Edo, Ondo).
To win a governorship election in Nigeria, a candidate must: (1) receive the highest number of votes overall, AND (2) win at least 25% of votes in at least two-thirds of the state's LGAs. If no candidate meets both conditions, a supplementary election is held. Elections are conducted via INEC's Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS).

The 2027 Nigeria governorship elections are expected to be held in March 2027 for most states, following Nigeria's four-year election cycle. INEC will publish the official timetable ahead of the elections. Off-cycle states like Ekiti, Osun, Edo, Ondo, Anambra, Kogi, Bayelsa and Imo may hold elections in different years.
